Sustainable
upholstery fabric encompasses a variety of textiles. Organic cotton
is a common selection. It is grown without pesticides and isn’t
genetically modified. Organic cotton can also be printed on with a variety
of colors and patterns.
If you like organic cotton as a sustainable upholstery fabric, but
don’t feel that it is strong enough to suit your purposes, you
can always strengthen it with hemp. Hemp takes half as much water to
grow and doesn’t require pesticides. It is an incredibly durable
material and an excellent textile choice on its own.
Other options for sustainable upholstery fabric include organic wool,
tusha silk, and Tencel. Tencel is the only form of Lyocell available
in the United States. This is a fiber that is created from wood pulp
cellulose. It is soft, resistant to wrinkles, and very strong whether
wet or dry.
