If you are looking to create a sustainable office, look for the things that you already have around you. There is a good chance that you might already have some old furniture that is not being used that could be reconfigured to be made into a desk or a bookshelf. This is an economical, as well as an eco-friendly idea. If you do not already have furniture like this that you would want to use on the project, you may want to go to yard sales and look up the online classifieds and find out what other kinds of things might be available.

If you are not into repurposing furniture, there are other options. Some of the larger furniture stores will include sections that include “green” furniture. Buying this furniture, even if new, is a great way to create a sustainable office. Sometimes modular furniture is a better choice than the soft, plushy office furniture.

For example, there are some definitely not eco-friendly materials that go into making leather, so you may want to skip the big leather chair.

There are other smaller items, like recycled paper and pencils, that can be used to create a sustainable office, but if you want to make the biggest impact, you should look at the furniture that is being used.
