Sustainable living

Sustainable livingSustainable living is a style of environmentally-responsible living, maintained by either an individual or a society. The focus is to partake in a lifestyle that can be sustained with minimal exhaustion of the planet’s resources. Water conservation, diversified transportation, eco-friendly housing, and renewable energy are some of the major concerns for proponents of this green style living.

Water conservation is a basic tenet of sustainable living. U.S. state, city, and governmental agencies are already making small moves to fight water shortages in certain areas. For instance, statutes are being implemented which regulate the amount of municipal water allocated to each household. There are many simple changes that can be made in the home to limit the wasting of water. Here are some examples:
• Fix dripping faucets and leaking pipes as the continual drops do add up.
• Don’t let the water run as you are brushing your teeth.
• Cut some minutes out of your shower by turning off the water as you lather up.
• Install a water-saving shower head.
•Water outdoor plants earlier in the day to slow the process of evaporation.
• Buy a float booster for your toilet’s tank.
• Use your washing machine and dishwasher for cleaning full loads only.

Today, many people are dealing with the frustration of high gas prices. Fuel-efficient driving is not only better on your wallet, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. Some things you can do to promote fuel-efficiency include:
• Accelerate smoothly and slowly and then get into high gear as quickly as possible. Nearly 50% of the energy needed to power your car during city-driving goes towards acceleration.
• Keep your highway cruising speed around 55mph. Your fuel-efficiency plummets greatly from 60mph onwards.
• Use your air conditioner sparingly.
• Make sure your tires are properly inflated. This prevents increased rolling resistance.

Small daily changes are a big part of sustainable living, but there are also some larger investments one can make which will reap continual benefits for your home as well as the environment.

This site is primarily concerned with home furnishing decisions that promote an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Choosing furniture created from recycled or highly-renewable materials is an excellent way to accomplish this goal. Consider buying wood products which bear the Forest Stewardship Council’s label. These products have come from reliable methods which promote sustainable living. Also consider purchasing furnishings which were created from recycled material.
