Now, going "green" in furnishing your home or other personal space doesn't stop with solid wood furniture. A commitment by some manufacturers to create eco-friendly upholstered furniture has dramatically increased the range of product offerings to include beautiful upholstered furniture.

All the same sustainable principles and practices are now applied to beautifully designed and crafted upholstered furniture. In some cases, entire lines are domestically made in family run and operated workshops in the USA, using sustainable materials to create furniture that is as beautiful as it is eco-friendly.

While wood frames can be produced using exotic and highly sustainable woods such as Bamboo or Hevea, often times, more common hardwoods such as maple, oak and pine are used. Responsible manufacturers use only woods sourced from producers who adhere to widely accepted standards for sustainable forestry, as promoted by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), or other governing bodies.

Steel used for furniture springs and other hardware are often made from recycled steel. The percentage of recycled metal depends on the amount used and the available of suitable metals.

Upholstered furniture seat backs and cushions are filled with various types of eco-friendly post-consumer regenerated fibers. In many cases, cushions are cased in 100% cotton.

Exposed wood trim and furniture feet or bases can be finished using environmentally-friendly and healthy water-based, non-toxic, zero VOC stains. VOC's (volatile organic compounds) are organic compounds which are known to affect the environment and human health.

Today, there are many choices for eco-friendly or sustainable upholstery fabrics. Many are made from 100% natural, renewable fibers, including linen, cotton, hemp and recycled fabrics. Available in vast arrays of colors, patterns and prints, these fabrics ensure that the discerning "green" customer can now buy fine upholstered furniture that meets the highest standards in quality, durability, sustainability, and of course... style.
