Furniture
Furniture is a catch-all term used to describe objects designed to
hold humans. Ever-changing architectural styles through the ages have
influenced furniture design. Wood is the most ancient material used
to make furniture and remains the most popular.
Furniture has been around since antiquity, as evidenced by plenty of
archaeological discoveries. It is also considered a form of decorative
art. Modern artistic movements of note in the 19th Century include Gothic,
Neoclassicism, Rococo, Eastlake, Aesthetic, and Arts and Crafts.
Furniture movements of the 20th Century include Art Nouveau, Modernism,
Bauhaus, Art Deco, Postmodern, and the Memphis movement. Art or not,
furniture is made and used by all humans.
